THE BEST PREPARATION FOR TOMORROW IS DOING YOUR BEST TODAY
FEB 1 | HIGH KEY PORTRAITS (DUE: Feb 11)
Today we’re going to learn all about what high key photography is and how to create the effect. We’ll go over what kind of equipment you’ll need, how to set it up, as well as what camera settings you can expect to give you good results.
What is high key lighting? Wikipedia and I basically agree on the concept. High key lighting produces relatively shadowless images with a “blown” bright white background. High key photography uses unnaturally bright lighting to blow out most or all harsh shadows in an image. THE PROJECT: You will be creating a PHOTO ESSAY using the High Key Lighting technique. Students in your group will play various roles such as: photographer, setup, lighting, makeup/costume, director, post-editing, and models. Your group will decide on a theme for your photo series (we will discuss this in class further). Each member of your group is responsible for editing and submitting a minimum 2 photographs of their own. This will help eliminate any piggybacking on one group member doing all the work. You can hand in as many photos as you like for yourself. If you can not exhibit an understanding of how to edit this will make the following projects very difficult for you.

WHAT IS A PHOTO ESSAY?
A photo-essay (or photographic essay) is a set or series of photographs that are intended to tell a story or evoke a series of emotions in the viewer. A photo essay will often show pictures in deep emotional stages.

MARCH 4 | "SO YOUR NAME IS JUST MCLOVIN'?"
Create a "fake" driver's license for a fictional "character". The photograph will be of you, except not the "real" you. I am not going to give too many guidelines. The objective is to make it look authentic and show that the Illustrator and Photoshop tools you hold can be put to use.
But here is your project outline and guide:
The layout design should be made in Illustrator. The photo editing portion will be done in Camera Raw and then Photoshop. *we will not be designing and producing fake IDs to be used in participation of any illegal activities, okay Deba? |

All photo dimensions should be cropped to 4x6 inches. Think about integrating accessories into your technique that will make it even more realistic such as a broom, vacuum, purse, or an umbrella as shown here… . Objects in the surrounding environment can also be visual aids such a phone booth, railings, or entry ways. Consider using a fan to change the way hair and clothes look in the shot. The more creative you are, the better your results will likely be.

MAY 3 | PHOTOGRAPHY PROJECT: Choose 1 of the 2 options as your last photo assignment
ACTION HERO
For this photography project you will be creating an action sequence. Brainstorm and come up with a plan and idea for your photo opp. Do not just blindly go out and wing it. Put some thought into it before executing the photo. You will talk with Mr. Choy about your ideas before taking out a camera.
You will need a tripod, camera, and a good "moving" subject to do this assignment. Make sure the camera is on a tripod and the tripod does not move. It will make life much easier when you move into post-production in Photoshop. STEPS: 1. Brainstorm your idea and plan it out 2. Set up for the the photo outdoors 3. Make sure camera is set on "continuous shooting", and MANUAL or SHUTTER mode 4. Shutter Speed: 1/320 or faster 5. Aperture: f7-f10 (you want a large depth of field) 6. ISO: 400-800 (INDOORS), 100-200 (OUTDOORS) 7. Take 6 or more photos for the Action Sequence 8. Merge the photos together in PHOTOSHOP first (use MASKING TOOL) 9. BLACK BRUSH- Deletes WHITE BRUSH- Brings Back (use <60% hardness) 10. Save as a PSD file (to keep your layers) and as a JPEG when you are done editing. 11. Open the JPEG file in CAMERA RAW and do your edits (levels, color etc...) 12. Make sure all photos are cropped to 4x6inches dimension 13. Save project as action_yourname.jpg |

-OR- MULTIPLE PERSONALITIES
For this project, you will be composing a photograph that involves MULTIPLES of yourself. Look at the examples on the right hand side to get a feel for what the project entails.
Make sure you are using a tripod and keeping your exposures consistent. Your subject model should stay as still as possible because you don't want to cause any motion blur. Upload all the files into Photoshop and begin your editing process. Use CREATE MASKING LAYER (in layers panel- square with circle icon). Switch your tool to BRUSH. Black color will take away, and White color will bring back what you erased. Make sure all photos are cropped to 4x6 inches dimension Save this as multiple_yourname.jpg |
MAY 1 | FILM PROJECT [your choice]
For your final Media Arts 11/12 course project, you and your group will propose and create a film of your choice. You have free reign as to what your video entails, the only exception is that you come up with a formal proposal plan for your project.
Prior to beginning the project, all students will submit a PROPOSAL LETTER. The letter will be a statement of the student's explanation as to why they chose this particular project and their intended plan to successfully complete the project. This is a 15+ hour project, if your group does not put a minimum of 15 full hours into the project, you do not get a passing evaluation (15hrs of sitting around in class does not count). Students must have the project approved before the start of any work on the project. In this requirement, the proposal must be typed and formally written. Not just some random notes jotted down. Components of Proposal Letter:
A script and storyboard will be a mandatory requirement. Of course, depending of the project you are going, there are different degrees of planning needed. |
Here are some ideas:
|
CAMERA SHOTS
A camera shot is the amount of space that is seen in one shot or frame. Camera shots are used to demonstrate different aspects of a film's setting, characters and themes. As a result, camera shots are very important in shaping meaning in a film. Reviewing the examples on the right hand side of this page should make the different camera shots clearer.
CAMERA MOVEMENTS
Camera movement is one of the tools in the filmmaker’s arsenal that can bring life and a unique quality to the vast number of shots that comprise a film- in short, it helps shape the viewer’s perspective of the world created by the filmmaker. While often under-appreciated by the viewer, it is often one of the key elements in film that draws our attention and makes us enjoy what we are viewing.
CAMERA ANGLES
It is important not to confuse camera angles and camera shots. Camera shots are used to demonstrate different aspects of setting, themes and characters. Camera angles are used to position the viewer so that they can understand the relationships between the characters. These are very important for shaping meaning in film as well as in other visual texts.
SCRIPT WRITING [CELTX]
Scriptwriting is an art-form, and creating art is never easy. Every time you watch a TV show, watch a film or even play a video game you are taking in the work of a scriptwriter.
With today being driven by the various mediums of entertainment scriptwriting has becomes one of the best page and attractive jobs going. Film scripts have been sold for in excess of $1 million. With that sort of money floating around it's no wonder people are becoming more interested in the idea of scriptwriting. However scriptwriting can be a difficult and arduous task. Even the best of scriptwriters often have creative lulls and can go for years without writing a single script. |
